Don't make this critical mistake when asking management for approval
You want management to approve something.
Maybe it's a new hire. Or a big investment. Or putting the brakes on new features to tackle technical debt. Whatever it is, don't make this critical mistake:
Not showing your work.
Always give alternate options
Even if you are 100% confident of the right path forward, it's critical that you show management the alternatives you've considered. Never go into a presentation asking for Plan A to be approved without also showing Plan B and Plan C. Help management understand that you've already considered the trade-offs.
Make your strong recommendation
Presented multiple options? Great. Just don't rely on management to choose the right one. Even if the right path seems obvious to you, it's important that you not only show multiple alternatives, but also stand behind the direction you recommend.
Be the expert
When you present multiple paths and then make a strong and confident case for the best course forward, you come across as an expert. You'll quickly differentiate yourself from employees who simply seek approval without giving full context.
Learn to make the business case
Growing in your career means not only doing great work, but also thinking strategically and understanding that every decision comes with a fixed cost and an opportunity cost. There is often no "right" answer to most business decisions, but there is a way to methodically weigh the pros and cons.
Three options + your recommendation = the winning formula
Management is busy. They're also impatient. Show them that you've done the work, and then advocate strongly for the right path forward. You'll stand out from the crowd and have a better chance to getting what you want.
